Why Lionel Messi Could Block Manchester United Signing Summer Target
Manchester United’s aim of bringing Jordi Alba from the Camp Nou to Old Trafford this summer could be hindered by Lionel Messi, according to reports.
Barcelona defender Alba is one of the possible targets for José Mourinho at the end of the season, according to the Manchester Evening News, as he looks for a replacement for out-of-favor Luke Shaw.
The Spaniard has proved to be an integral part of the Barcelona team since joining from Valencia in 2012, winning a number of major trophies in his time in Catalonia.
But Mourinho may find a surprise obstacle in his path should he pursue an interest in Alba, for the 28-year-old is considered a key player for Barcelona’s star man Messi.
According to Spanish newspaper Diario Gol, Messi would look to stop Alba leaving the club, having shown his disappointment at the Catalan club selling right-back Dani Alves last summer.
Alba, however, has been open about his problematic situation at Barcelona. While on international duty with Spain this past week, he spoke about how the club failed to show a “complete confidence” in him.
The transfer window reopens on July 1.
